Rated 5 out of 5 by sammmm Best earphones for your money!
I bought these earphones over two years ago and only now has one earbud gone out. It has lasted over two years! Then longest of any of my earphones. It was worth every penny and I will be purchasing them again.

For the health of it I walk at least a couple of miles pretty much every day. As I walk I listen to a variety of audio on my 1st generation iPod Nano, from music to podcasts, soundtracks of video recordings to audiobooks which is to say that the quality of the recordings varies. What never varies is the delivery of the sound from my iPod to my ears and that's superbly handled by my Philips O'Neill THE SPECKED in ear headphones.
Having to daily untangle the wires of my factory earbuds became increasingly annoying. No matter how careful I was about storing them after each use it seemed there was always at least some small mess to straighten out before I could actually use them the next time. Because I ride a bike (one with a motor) I'm a little protective of my stuff so my iPod is kept in a protective case, has been from day 1 and when its not in use I keep it and my earbuds / headphones in an eyeglass case, one with a hard metal shell that's hinged and tucked safely away in a travel bag that's attached to my bike.
When my factory earbuds failed for the last time I did some online research to determine which of the numerous products out there would be a suitable replacement. I was pleased to find THE SPECKED for a number of reasons, not the least of which is a gutsy tangle-free cord. If I could post a picture of the cord I would, just so you could see how well it has stood up to daily use over the past 2 years. Bear in mind that the cord is constantly being pinched by the edges of the eyeglass case in which my Nano is kept as I feed the cord from inside the case to my ears, leaving my Nano in the case. The fabric is only just slightly abraded but not frayed.
Unlike factory earbuds THE SPECKED have 3 differently sized ear sleeves which make it possible for the headphones to comfortably fit and stay put inside the ear. My ability to experience subtle shades of sound and hear full rich bass tones at the same time was a pleasant side effect of purchasing THE SPECKED... after all I was just looking to stop the tangles, but the day I jacked in my new headphones AND set my Nano's EQ to 'Bass Boost' I knew there was more to THE SPECKED than met the eye.
Finally there's the nasty business of keeping things clean so that they work properly. An in ear headphone is likely to come into contact with earwax. Over time that can interfere with the performance of THE SPECKED unless you know how to remove it. Cleaning the sleeves is one thing, just use a cotton swab, but what about wax that gets inside the hard shell housing and down onto the wire screen discs? Easy. Grab a sewing needle, one with a fine point, carefully insert the point into the wire mesh and 'pick' the 2 mesh discs from their housings. Place the discs into a cup, saucer or other suitable container and then cover them with 1/4" of hydrogen peroxide which will literally dissolve the wax in just a few moments time. When the mesh discs are wax free remove them from the peroxide, place them onto a soft absorbent cloth or tissue which will wick away the peroxide and then, when dry, replace the discs back into the housings. They will snap back in place thanks to the smart design of the unit. That's it, you're done!
Lots of bass, tangle free cord, a comfortable fit and easy to clean. What more could you want?
PS: At the time this review was written there were a number of user reviews for various models of THE SPECKED which made reference to how the user / reviewer could hear a 'rubbing sound' whenever the cord rubs against their clothes (as they moved) or as the cord rubs against itself. I too experienced this but quickly alleviated it by 'snugging' the cord under my chin. How? At the point in the cord where it splits into two wires, one for each ear piece, there's a short silvery metallic barrel with the word SPECKED and the headphone model number on it. Just above the barrel there's a soft plastic disc that's the same color as the hard plastic moulded ear pieces. The disc easily slides up and down the pair of wires it surrounds. Place the headphone ear pieces in your ears and then move the plastic disc up the wires (under your chin) to where it just touches. This will prevent the cord from being jostled as you move around, thereby alleviating the 'rubbing sound' so that all you hear is what you want to hear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Welder Long lasting, rugged cord, great sound!
I work in a pretty rough environment, I fabricate and weld for a living and these are the best headphones I've had to date! I've had them for over a year already! The Skullcandy sets I used to get wouldn't even come close to lasting this long, I've gone through many pairs and just dealt with it until I saw these. The first thing that sold me was the cord, it looked like it would hold up and it has! I love these things! I use them with my iPhone or iPod, I would recommend them to anyone as durable, high quality headphones!

Rated 5 out of 5 by JamarkliolousClothesoff Durable beyond belief, and great sound and bass quality
Despite the expert review, these earphones are great! They've lasted me two years now, and just blew out. They have gone through water 5 or 6 times and worked awesome after. The cord is indestructible, and the cones barely ever fell off. -(Not like skullcandys at least) Great bass, good highs and lows. couldn't ask for more for the price. The cord does tangle a little, but they untangle very easily.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Benji10 Greatest in ear headphone I've ever used.
I've had these for about a year and a half now. They haven't failed me yet. That is much better than what I can say about other brands of ear buds. They are really reliable overall. They have really good cable strength and this allows for some abuse. I have dropped these in water twice and they still work like new. The cable has been chewed on by my cat, but she can't get through the outside of the covering. Sound quality is great and very deep. Design is neat and the wide array of colored ear buds in also very cool. I can't seem to tangle these either, no matter what I do. I can pull the cord two ways and the tangle is gone. I would recommend these to anyone. I got mine at Target, which is a good place to get headphones.

The earbuds may have had really good sound quality, but the cords were extremely loud, and it made it hard to focus on the music. Did anyone else think the cords were loud?

First time I got a pair of the Philips Specked I alraedy knew it was going to be good since it was made by philips. When I opened them up and tried them out i was impressed on how much better they were then I first though they would be. The cord doesn't tangle up or brake like the others I've had in the past. I've had my Specked ear phones for a few months witch by the time most of other would have broke but not these. They finaly did brake only because they fell in the road and a truck drove over them haha and they still worked. I was so happy with this product that I got a new pair just the other day. BEST GIFT for the holidays if you are shoping and not sure what to get.
