According to all instructions from Philips the secondary outlets should work if a minimum 30W consumption device is connected to the Master outlet and that device is switched on. I have connected devices that consume 90W and the secondary outlets still do not activate. Very poor design and very disappointed. My next power strip/surge protector will definitely not have the Philips brand.

Plugged in every Laptop, printer, lamp and even a microwave into the "Master" to see if the Secondary outlets would work and could find nothing generating enough power for the secondary outlets to work. It goes back to the store tomorrow.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Verified Reviewer don't bother with it unless you know the secret set-up
Is there a way to give no stars? I purchased this because I was in WalMart and needed one-Philips is a name brand, so why not this one? Had I researched it before I bought it (why would I for a little ticket item?), I would have never bothered. The one user that likes it evidently has an appropriate set-up of devices. How utterly dumb that there is no explanation on the box of the 30W requirement and necessary plug arrangement. The device probably works fine but I certainly can't use it and will be returning it and not looking for another Philips.

Like others I had trouble with the secondary outlets. Nowhere on the box does it say what the FAQ on the website says: "The Surge Protector detects when a connected device to the Master outlet is switched both at ON and OFF. The purpose of this Master +Secondary outlets is that if you switch on/off the Master component, all other devices connected to the 4 secondary outlets are automatically switched on/shut down as well. Low power devices connected the master outlet, consuming less than 30W (continuously) might not be detected. As such the Secondary outlets will not function."
I had to try a variety of things to plug into the Master outlet before I saw & heard the Secondary outlets become active.
Unfortunately I bought this specifically to power my fish tank's varied devices, and none of them pull that much juice to enable the secondary outlets. Otherwise this power strip would have fit all my other requirements: cord length, better-than-average Joule rating, number of outlets, black color.

Rated 1 out of 5 by honeyrococo I hate this product
I hate this product so much. I would take it back had I actually kept the packaging, but who thinks that you need to keep the packaging for a freaking surge protector? I found the box to be misleading. I did not understand that the master switch would just shut off if the thing plugged into it went to sleep. Things that are sleeping still need to recharge etc. Add to that all the other things plugged into this outlet stop charging as well. It is a total waste of plastic metal and my time. I honestly think it is the worst piece of electrical equipment that I have ever purchased. There ought to be an override option to keep the freaking thing operational.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Jerry99 I didn't buy this product to save the planet!
I bought this product to charge my laptop, cell phone, iPad, and whatever else needed electricity next to my couch. Apparently, none if these items draw enough juice to allow me to use the secondary outlets so, instead of six working outlets, I have two. Why would I want to shut down items that are charging or staying charged anyway? My secondary outlets do not work because I'm not using enough energy yet they were designed to save energy? You should have added a switch that could over-ride this function because now I have to go back to the store to buy a surge protector that serves my needs. My receipt is long gone so I'm stuck with this thing. However, I do appreciate your web site for reminding me to read packages more closely before I spend my money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Powerconsumer Works a described
I wondered with some of the negative reviews if this worked, but so far it works as described. You must have something plugged into and powered on in the MASTER outlet to make the secondary outlets work. It makes it much easier to power down everything. Only thing I found that wasn't quite up to my expectations was there was not a wide spaced outlet for a DC adapter in the switched outlets.
