Healthy hair styling tips

Looking to straighten, curl, blowdry or use styling products? We help you get the style you want in way that’s good for your hair.

Read on to find out how to style your hair with less damage

Healthy hair straightening tips

It’s worth investing in a good quality hair straightener such as the Philips SalonStraight Sonic straightener.

Choose one with ceramic plates, ionic conditioning and adjustable temperature. Wider plates are great if you have long, thick hair while thinner plates are great for straightening fine or shorter hair.

Also look out for technology - such as Philips EHD technology – that evenly distributes heat across the plates to prevent hot spots.

Andy’s top tips for healthy straightening include:

  • Don’t straighten wet or damp hair. Always wait for it to dry before straightening
  • Always use the best temperature for your hair type. Andy recommends 180 degrees for fine, thinner hair and up to 230 for thicker hair.
  • Choose a heat activated protection spray and apply liberally
  • Straighten hair in small sections. Start close to the root and glide the straightener all the way down to the ends of the hair, keeping it moving at all times
Healthy hair drying tips

A good hairdryer is a real styling essential. Choose an ionic dryer – such as the Philips SalonDry AC - with a professional wattage (eg 2000W) and longlife AC motor. Also look out for a hairdryer that has flexible heat and speed settings and a ceramic element to balance the drying heat and the airflow.

  • Don’t hold your hair dryer too close to your hair. 10cm away from the hair will still give you a great blow dry and will avoid over heating the hair
  • Make sure you direct the air-flow down the hair shaft, smoothing the hair cuticle as you go. This can be a bit tiring as it often involves holding the hair dryer up above your head
  • For best blow-drying results, rough-dry straight or wavy hair until it is 70-80% dry before starting styling.
  • For best blow-drying results, rough-dry curly hair with a diffuser until it is 50-60% dry before starting styling
  • Adjust the heat setting to suit your hair type. If you have fine, dry or coloured hair, use a lower setting and always keep the airflow moving. If you blowdry your hair more than once a week then it is a good idea to use a conditioning mask regularly to replace lost moisture and keep your hair looking and feeling healthy.
  • Alternative with hot and cold air and finish, to set, with the cold shot button.
  • If you want a style that’s full of body and volume, you should blow dry from the top down. This stops the volume from being flattened out and also gives the hair more time to cool down, setting it. The result is more volume and shape at the front and top, where you need it most
  • Don’t spend too long on your blow dry. A great healthy blow dry shouldn’t take longer than 20 minutes.
Healthy hair curling tips

Curls are a great way of quickly and noticeably changing your look. Choose a ceramic coated curling set that comes with a variety of attachments such as the 13-piece Philips SalonStylist.

  • Choose a ceramic curling iron which has a smooth, shine enhancing styling surface.
  • If you’re looking to create a really playful, feminine effect, then use a curler with a small curl attachment. It works best if your hair is shoulder length or shorter with a few layers. Be sure to brush the curls out thoroughly for a modern, happy go lucky look.
  • For a vintage glamour look, use a medium size curling iron to create ‘set’ look barrel curls.
  • If you want a natural looking wave then look for a conical curl attachment. The barrel goes from thick to thin so it mimics the movement of a natural curl.
Healthy hair styling tips

For straight hair with volume, rediscover airstylers such as the Philips Natural Straight. Airstylers such as the Philips Natural Straight also offer a healthier way of styling and are particularly good when used on dry hair. This is because the brushing action helps stimulate the scalp and help distribute existing oil (sebum) through the hair.

  • Use a heat protection spray liberally whenever heat styling to ensure hair stays as healthy as possible.
  • Spray heat protection spray onto the hair from 10cm away. In addition to protecting hair from damage, heat protection spray is also good for smoothing flyaways.
  • Prep hair by texture. For fine or thin hair, use lighter products such as mousse or gel mousse combinations. Medium textured hair works well with lighter products such as mousse or gel mousse as well as with regular gel, glaze, liquids and creams. Thickly textured hair needs heavier products such as extra strength mousse, gel, creams or wax.
  • Mousse is one of the easiest styling products to use. Not only is mousse is light in the hair, it’s also easy to see how much you’re putting in. This way you’re less likely to overload.
  • With any product – mousse, serum or gel - always start by applying a small fist-sized amount to the hair, then adding more if necessary. To get the maximum effect, be careful to apply it only to the roots and not the top layer of hair, as this weighs it down.
  • To smooth hair, spray hairspray onto a natural bristle brush and gently brush through the hair.
  • For a final extra boost, tip your head forward and spritz hairspray lightly at the roots.
  • Additional styling tool essentials include a parting comb, hair clips and hair elastics.

Healthy hair explained

Your hair is important but how much do you really know about it? At Philips Haircare, we believe that that only way to love your hair is to really get to know it.

You and your hair

The health of our hair is a good reflection of our inner health.

If we’re in good health, our hair tends to be shiny, strong and lustrous.

In contrast, illness, stress, tiredness and over processing can all leave it looking dull, lifeless and difficult to manage. We call these factors ‘hair aggressors’.

Hair aggressors
  • UV radiation
  • Pollution
  • Weather extremes
  • Central heating
  • Stressful situations
  • Excessive heat styling
  • Water irritation
  • Harsh haircare products

Looking after our physical health helps keep our hair looking and feeling beautiful.

Healthy hair tips

  • Choose a nutritious diet – what we eat plays a significant role in determining the health of our hair and scalp. Try to maintain a diet rich in protein. Good sources of protein include poultry, fish, cheese, eggs and lean meat. To help increase shine and strength, step up your intake of fish, nuts (almonds and brazil nuts in particular), yoghurt and seaweed and cut down on caffeine and alcohol.
  • Take vitamin and mineral supplements – many hair complaints are the result of vitamin or mineral deficiencies. Supplements such as beta-carotene, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, omega-3, starflower, selenium and zinc can help treat many common problems such as dandruff and flaky scalps.
  • Exercise – hair needs oxygen to stay healthy. Taking regular exercise will help boost blood flow. This is important as the blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the hair’s roots.
  • Use the right tools – choose the best styling products and heated appliances for your hair type. Philips Haircare is the only haircare brand to commit to developing appliances that style the hair in a way that minimises damage yet maximises its natural beauty
Hair structure

Hair grows from follicles in the skin. The part of the hair inside the follicle is the hair root while the protruding part - the part of the hair we see - is called the hair fibre. This fibre is made up of a protein called keratin – a linked together formation of amino acids.

Keratinisation (or the process of conversion to keratin) happens as the cells change their shape as they grow up through the hair shaft and leave the scalp.

Each shaft of hair is made of two key layers of keratin:
1. Cuticle. An outer covering of overlapping keratin scales – these can be compared to overlapping terracotta tiles on a roof or the scales on the back of a fish.
2. Cortex. A middle layer of the hair fibre consisting of a unique protein. This part gives the hair its pigment, strength, elasticity. It can be best described as looking like the curly cord of a telephone.

It is the hair shaft’s outermost layer – the cuticle is the hard and resistant layer– that protects it from mechanical and environmental damage.

Looking after this layer is really important – it’s key to having shiny, healthy looking hair.

Healthy hair in numbers

  • 120,000 – 150,000 – the number of individual hairs in a full head of hair. Blondes have more, redheads fewer and women tend to have more than men do
  • 50 – 100 – the number of hairs we lose naturally each day
  • 250 – the number of hairs per square centimetre of scalp
  • 30% - the percentage of water that hair in good condition can absorb
  • 1cm – the amount hair grows on average every month

‘Be Blunt’ is a stylish long bob with a heavy fringe. Our interpretation of this look is easy to achieve and will show off your hair’s natural potential. The rounded fringe keeps this look shiny and modern.

During the daytime, this look can be soft, fresh and feminine yet professional. At night, it can be dressed up to look sleek, polished and modern.

BE BLUNT

Philips haircare 3 step expert advice, from start to finish:

1. Understand your hair

This look starts with a great cut and will work on most hairtypes especially hair that is slightly thick and springy with a natural wave. It’s also an incredibly flattering style for all ages since it frames and accentuates the face.

2. Care for healthy hair

With this style, don’t be tempted to use too many products as they can reduce the shine. In fact when using a good hair straightener – like the Philips SalonStraight Respect - you will find you won’t need to use a lot of styling products. This is great because you want to keep the hair flexible and soft so you can see and feel the bounce despite its straight look.

3. Create your style

For that ‘just left the hairdresser’ result, straighten your hair in small sections. Start close to the root and glide the straightener all the way down to the ends of the hair, keeping it moving at all times.

Easy Glamour

An incredibly feminine and simple way of wearing hair long and loose using your hairdryer. For this style, hair is kept romantically undone with rough partings and soft, flexible tumbling natural waves.

During the daytime, opt for a 1970s hairstyle loose centre parting with waves through the lower sections. For the evening, lose the parting and sweep hair back or to the side so that the waves cascade softly through the full length of the hair.

Philips haircare 3 step expert advice, from start to finish:

1. Understand your hair

This look works well on all types of mid to long length hair and can help to create movement and body even in fine, slightly damaged hair.

2. Care for healthy hair

Simply adjust the heat setting to suit your hair type. If you have fine, dry or coloured hair, use a lower setting and always keep the airflow moving. If you blowdry your hair more than once a week then it is a good idea to use a conditioning mask regularly to replace lost moisture and keep your hair looking and feeling healthy.

3. Create your style

This look is all about maximizing movement so don’t use too many products. A fist-sized amount of mousse is all you will need if your hair is fine. Mousse is great since it gives body and creates hold without stickiness and works best when used in conjunction with a hair dryer.

Gossip Girl

Straight hairstyles are back in fashion. What’s more they’re also extremely wearable.

The Natural Straight style looks and feels easy and relaxed but has been notoriously hard to achieve. Now you can easily get the look everyone is talking about!

By day, wear this style soft and loose with the ends flicked under. By night, maximize your hair’s volume with ends and layers kicked up and flicked out.

2. Care for healthy hair

This style is all about hair that is full of life and body so the Philips Natural Straight’s 200°C is the perfect styling temperature to use. If you heat the hair up too much then it will become too flat for this style.

3. Create your style

To smooth hair, gently brush from root to tip with the Philips Natural Straight while, to add volume, style in the same way but from underneath the hair.

Must use: Philips Natural Straight
