Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to descale my Philips coffee maker?

Yes. Descaling is an important part of the maintenance of your appliance. You should descale your appliance at least:

  • Every two months if you use soft or filtered water (Up to 18dH)
  • Every month if you use hard water (over 18dH)

You can contact your waterboard for more information about your tap water. If your appliance starts producing more steam, this can be an indication of scale building up in your appliance.

To descale your appliance, you can use any liquid descale agent or use white vinegar. Do not use cleaning vinegar. We advise you not to use powder descalers or tablets. If these agents are not dissolved completely, they can leave traces and harm the appliance.

Descaling will take half an hour to an hour to complete. Go through the following steps:

  1. Fill the water tank with white vinegar or follow the instructions on the package of your liquid descaler.
  2. There is no need to put a paper filter or coffee grind into the appliance.
  3. Switch on the appliance and let it complete one brewing cycle
Note: For thorough descaling, repeat step 1 to 3 to make sure no scale is left in the appliance.
  4. When using vinegar, let the appliance complete two more cycles with fresh, cold water to remove all vinegar from the appliance. For a liquid descaler, follow the instructions on the package, but at least complete one cycle with fresh, cold water.

Descaling your appliance can help you to:

  • Ensure the good quality of your brewed coffee
  • Keep the brewing time constant
  • Extend the lifetime of your appliance
  • Limit the chance your appliance might break down
