Maybe your iPod player is iPod Shuffle. The device does not support iPod Shuffle.

The device can support iPod players with 30-pin dock connector as the following:

20GB, 40GB, 20/30GB Photo, 40/60GB Photo, 30GB Video, 60GB/80 Video, Mini, Nano 1st/2nd/3rd generation, iPod 5th generation (video), iPod touch and iPod classic.
