How to descale my Philips Automatic Espresso machine?

We recommend you to descale your Philips Automatic espresso machine regularly to ensure great coffee taste and temperature. Use these video guides to descale your Philips Automatic espresso machine.

Use the right descaler

We advise you to use the Philips decalcifier only. Not using the Philips decalcifier will void your warranty. You can buy the Saeco descaler at www.saeco.com/care.

NOTE: Do not use a descaler based on acids such as vinegar.

How to descale my Philips 4000 and 3100

Descaling procedure

  1. Select 'Start Calc Clean' from the menu
  2. Press the Cappuccino button to select the descaling procedure
  3. The machine reminds you to insert the with water filled milk carafe and pull out the milk carafe dispenser to the right.
  4. The descaler symbol appears on the display.
  5. Pour the entire bottle of Philips descaling solution in the water tank.
  6. Fill the water tank up to the calc clean level
  7. Place the water tank back into the machine.
  8. Place a bowl underneath the milk frother and coffee spout
    9) Press the cappuccino button to start the descaling cycle.

The display will show the descaling progress. You can pause the descaling cycle by pressing the espresso button. Press the cappuccino button to resume the descaling procedure.

Rinsing procedure

  1. After finishing, rinse the water tank and fill it with fresh water to the maximum level and place back
  2. The start rinsing symbol appears on the display.
  3. Fill the milk carafe with water up to the minimum level and place back
  4. Pull out the milk carafe dispenser to the right.
  5. Place back the bowl.
  6. Press the cappuccino button to start the rinsing cycle.

The rinsing cycle is finished when the 'Calc Clean OK' symbol appears on the display. Press the cappuccino button to exit the descaling procedure.

Note: If the water tank symbol appears on the display instead of the 'Calc Clean OK' symbol, refill the water tank up to maximum level and perform another rinsing cycle.

How to descale my Philips 2000 (with dial knob)

1) Switch off the machine.

2) Empty the drip tray and place it back.

3) Empty the water tank and pour the entire Philips/Saeco descaling solution in it. Fill it up with fresh water to the MAX level and put it back.

4) Place a large container under the steam/water wand.

5) Turn the control dial to the central BEAN position.

6) Press the ESPRESSO and COFFEE buttons at the same time for 5 seconds. The machine dispenses the descaling solution in the drip tray internally at several one minute intervals. It does not dispense through the hot water/steam wand. This will take approximately 5 minutes. The orange descaling light starts flashing slowly and will continue to do so during the entire descaling cycle.

7) When the green TWO CUPS light shines steadily, turn the control dial to the HOT WATER position. After approximately 1 minute, the machine dispenses at several one minute intervals through the hot water/steam wand until the water tank is empty. This takes about 15 minutes.

8) When the green TWO CUPS light is flashing slowly, turn the control dial to the central BEAN position. The TWO CUPS light turns off and the red NO WATER light starts to shine steadily.

9) Remove and empty the container and drip tray and put them back.

10) Remove the water tank, rinse it and fill it up to the MAX level with fresh water. Put it back into the machine.

11) When the green TWO CUPS light starts to shine steadily, turn the control dial to the HOT WATER position. The machine performs a short circuit priming. The orange descaling light flashes double during the whole rinse cycle.

12) When the green TWO CUPS light starts flashing slowly, turn the control dial to the central BEAN position. The machine dispenses water internally in the drip tray. It does not dispense through the hot water/steam wand.

13) When the green TWO CUPS light starts to shine steadily, turn the control dial to the HOT WATER position. The machine now dispenses from the steam/water wand.

14) When the rinse cycle has been completed, the orange DESCALING light turns off and the EXCLAMATION light flashes. Turn the control dial to the central BEAN position.

15) The green STANDBY light flashes. The machine warms up and performs an automatic rinse cycle.

16) The machine is ready for use.

How to descale my Philips 2000 (without dial knob)

1) Switch off the machine.

2) Empty the drip tray and place it back.

3) Empty the water tank and pour the entire Philips/Saeco descaling solution in it. Fill it up with fresh water to the MAX level and put it back.

4) Place a large container under the coffee dispensing spout.

5) Press the ESPRESSO button for 5 seconds. The orange DESCALING light starts flashing slowly and will continue to do so during the entire descaling cycle.

6) The machine dispenses the descaling solution through the coffee dispensing spout at several one minute intervals until the water tank is empty. This takes about 20 minutes.

7) When the red NO WATER light turns on, remove and empty the container and drip tray and put them back.

8) Remove the water tank, rinse it and fill it up to the MAX level with fresh water. Put it back into the machine.

9) The machine starts dispensing water through the coffee dispensing spout. The orange DESCALING light flashes double during the whole rinse cycle.

10) When the rinse cycle has been completed, the orange DESCALING light turns off and the green STAND-BY light flashes. The machine warms up and performs an automatic rinse cycle.

11) The machine is ready for use.
