How do I measure with the Philips Avent ear thermometer?

    Published on 2018-02-02

To take your temperature with the Philips Avent Smart Ear thermometer please first ensure the following things:

    Thermometer at room temperature

Make sure the thermometer has the same temperature as the room you are measuring in. If you are unsure, allow the thermometer at least 30 minutes to adjust.

    Ear at normal temperature

Make sure that the ear itself is at normal temperature. For example, the ear has not been covered, or the person measured has been lying on their ear, in a warmer or colder area, in a warm pool or bath, etc.

    Clean the thermometer

Clean the sensor on your thermometer using a cotton swab and then gently place the tip just inside your ear canal, pointing towards the eardrum - you don't need to place it any deeper. Note: the readings in each ear can be a little different, so measure in the same ear consistently.

    Sit still

The person measured should sit still.

    Position the ear thermometer correctly

Hold the outer ear and gently pull it towards the rear of the head to straighten the ear canal.

    • Children under the age of 1: hold the outer ear and gently pull it straight back. (Fig. 7)

    • Children aged 1 year or older: hold the outer ear and gently pull the ear up and back (Fig.8).

Insert the probe tip very gently and slowly into the ear canal (Fig. 9).

    • Make sure the probe tip points straight towards the eardrum when you hold it (Fig. 10).
    • Always insert the probe tip into the same ear, in the same direction and at the same depth.

Note: When you do not point the probe tip towards the eardrum (Fig. 11), the measurement result will be inaccurate.

    Note

    • We advise you not to use the device if you are using ear drops or other ear medication. In this case, measure the temperature in the untreated ear (if possible).
    • It is not necessary to take more than one measurement. However, if you do, you might notice subtle variations in readings. This is normal. In this case, the app will show the latest reading.
    • If you are worried about your temperature, or a fever persists, we recommend that you consult with your doctor.
