Well-being by light

Most people feel more energetic and refreshed during the bright and sunny summer season when they’re outdoors enjoying natural light. Both sunshine and daylight have a positive effect on us. When we are exposed to the right type of light, it helps to align our daily rhythm or wake us up more easily. With this in mind, Philips has developed a complete range of light therapy products that boost your energy by using the unique health benefits light offers.

The National Sleep Foundation has chosen to make Philips Wake up Light and goLITE BLU its Official Light Therapy Products in recognition of the benefits they provide in helping you wake-up better and feel brighter, more energetic throughout your day.

How does the Philips Wake-up Light work?

Soft rising light wakes you gently

Starting half an hour before your set wake up time, the Wake-up Light gradually fills your room with bright light like a rising sun emitting natural light. The light gently prepares your body for waking up while you are still asleep. So, if the wake up time is set at 7 am, the light will gradually get stronger starting at 6:30. At 7 am the light will have reached its highest level, which you can then adjust to your personal preference. Choose up to 20 different brightness settings and use it as a bed lamp as well.

At the set wake up time, your body is ready to wake up and natural sounds will gradually accompany the light. You will wake up feeling refreshed.

Natural sounds, radio or music

The Wake-up Light will gradually accompany the light with sound when the highest set light intensity has been reached. You can choose to wake up with pleasant natural sounds or your favorite FM radio station.

You can even add new sounds and music via USB, to wake up with a new sound everyday. You can download specially developed sounds or use your own MP3 music collection. (HF3485 only).

How does light therapy work?

The light must reach your eyes, but you don’t need to stare at it directly. You can use EnergyLight or goLITE BLU to fight low energy levels while eating, working or watching TV. Avoid ‘light baths’ late at night as your sleep might be disrupted.

Use one of these restorative Philips products and the benefits can be apparent after a few days.

Philips goLITE BLU

When to use light therapy?

In countries with long winters, many people experience loss of energy and low spirits due to lack of light. It’s known as the winter blues. Exposure to a ‘light bath’ received from a Philips EnergyLight can restore the wellbeing and energy levels that you feel in summer.

Do you experience energy dips in the morning, after lunch or in the afternoon? The Philips goLITE BLU can help you to feel alert when you need to. Simply use the goLITE BLU up to 20 minutes to get your natural energy boost when you need it!

Blue or white light therapy?

The Philips EnergyLight and the Philips goLITE BLU light therapy products both help to fight the winter blues.

Some people love the 10.000 lux white EnergyLight. It is used in traditional light therapy for more than 25 years and it brings the sunshine into your home.

Others prefer the compact and portable goLITE BLU with the light from the blue summer sky. Used at home or at work, it can help you to overcome those afternoon energy dips in just 20 minutes.

Testimonials
Jeff Major

Thank you so much for making such an excellent product. It sits right on my desk at work, where I can use it without any trouble during my workday. I can tell I am sleeping better and feel far less exhausted in the evenings. We've had a very gray winter and this has completely snapped me out of the doldrums. Thanks again.

Bernie Cherak

Very easy to use and the results from using the device are impressive even after a short time.

Erica Skyrman

Love the portability. I've been able to take it out of the house and show it to 3 friends.

Jeannie Locatelli

The winter 'veil' lifted the first time I used it. My energy level has improved and my appetite has gone away. I have no cravings at all. I need to be careful not to use it after 5:00 p.m. I use it once in the morning for 15 minutes and once in the afternoon for 15 -20 minutes.

National Sleep Foundation Partnership

Philips and the National Sleep Foundation are working together to help people understand the effects of light on overall well-being. Learn more about sleep health and how to work with your natural sleep and wake-up patterns to feel more energetic throughout the day with the sleep education guide, “Managing Light for Better Sleep” from the experts at the National Sleep Foundation. Each Philips light therapy product comes with a free copy of the Guide.

The National Sleep Foundation is an educational and scientific not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving sleep health and safety through education, public awareness, and advocacy.

Together, Philips and the National Sleep Foundation are helping you to sleep smart, wake smart, and live smart. Read more about how we’re doing this here.

The National Sleep Foundation has developed some simple tips to achieve a more positive sleep/wake-up environment.

Develop Morning Rituals to Wake Up Refreshed: Increasing exposure to light in the morning can help you be alert, especially when combined with other morning rituals, such as stretching, a cup of coffee and planning the day ahead. Try to get out in the morning sun as your alertness can depend on exposure to natural light.

Manage Your Sleep-Wake Cycle: The first light of each day sets your schedule for your natural sleep-wake cycle. Gradually maximizing exposure to light each morning and gradually reducing exposure to light in the evening will help you get the sleep you need. The Philips Wake-up Light - a premium alarm clock that simulates a natural sunrise - is a good way to enhance your wake-up experience and morning routine, as it provides a more pleasant, refreshed wake-up and gives you the energy you need to start your day. It also features a dusk simulator to help prepare you for sleep at night.

Establish Evening Rituals for Going to Sleep: Relaxing activities before bedtime help separate sleep time from excitement, stress and anxiety. Reading a book, soaking in a hot bath or listening to soothing music away from bright lights can help signal you that it is time to sleep.

Reserve Your Bedroom for Sleep: Keep work and other distractions out of your bedroom. Making your bedroom a sanctuary for rejuvenation will strengthen your positive association between your bedroom and sleep.

Optimize Your Sleep Environment: Design your bedroom to be cool, dark, quiet, comfortable and free of interruptions. Choose a quality mattress that is right for you and the way you sleep.
