What should I do if I have tooth sensitivity after whitening?

    Published on 31 October 2023

Some users may experience increased tooth sensitivity to cold during or after a whitening treatment, while others may have non-specific sensitivity or pain in their teeth, gums, tongue, lips, or throat. Symptoms should subside within 1 to 3 days.

    If you experience tooth sensitivity:

    • Try whitening every other or every third day.
    • If you currently use 9.5% hydrogen peroxide gel, consider purchasing a refill kit of 6% hydrogen peroxide gel for a more gradual and comfortable whitening experience. You can purchase the gel refills separately.
    • Use an over-the-counter desensitizing toothpaste with 5% potassium nitrate (KNO3) to treat tooth sensitivity, adhering to the respective toothpaste instructions.
    • Take a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug for pain, adhering to the respective drug's instructions as well as your doctor's recommendation for acceptable use.
